Mumbai:-
A legal representative based in Mumbai has lodged a complaint with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW), alleging that BookMyShow and Live Nation Entertainment have been involved in a significant ticket fraud related to Coldplay’s concert in India. The accusations focus on the ticket sales for the three-day event planned for January 2025 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, with tickets having been made available on Sunday, September 22, through BookMyShow, the official ticketing partner for the British band’s performances in India.

Amit Vyas, the Founder Partner of Vertices Partners, has made significant allegations against ticketing platforms. He asserted that these platforms have engaged in manipulative practices, such as blocking users or forcibly logging them out. This behavior has allowed bots and black-market operators to take control of ticket sales.

He emphasized that tickets labeled as sold out on BookMyShow subsequently surfaced on resale sites such as Viagogo, often at prices inflated by 30 to 50 times their original value. Vyas noted that these actions constitute a clear infringement of consumer rights and several stipulations of Indian Criminal Law. The Economic Offences Wing has commenced an investigation into this issue.

Vyas is pursuing the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which encompass organized crime, fraud, criminal conspiracy, and breach of trust, as reported by Bar and Bench.

Furthermore, he intends to submit a public interest litigation (PIL) petition to the Bombay High Court aimed at instituting rigorous regulatory measures for large-scale events to avert similar fraudulent incidents in the future.

BookMyShow refutes the claims

The company stated, “BookMyShow is not affiliated with any ticket selling or reselling platforms, including Viagogo and Gigsberg, nor with any third-party individuals involved in the resale of tickets for Coldplay’s Music Of The Spheres World Tour 2025 in India.”

It stated, “Scalping is explicitly prohibited and subject to legal penalties in India. We have lodged a complaint with the police and will fully cooperate with them during the investigation of this issue.”

The platform has strongly advised Coldplay fans in India to remain vigilant against scams: “We encourage you to be cautious and not become victims of these fraudulent activities. Purchasing tickets from unauthorized sources poses a risk to consumers, as they may end up with counterfeit tickets. Stay alert to these scammers.”

Additionally, the ticketing platform emphasized, “Steer clear of scams! BookMyShow is the sole official platform for ticket purchases.”
