OpenAI’s widely used AI chatbot, ChatGPT, is currently unavailable to users globally.
ChatGPT, the widely used AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, is currently experiencing downtime for users globally. OpenAI has recognized the outage and is actively looking into the matter. The situation appears to present two distinct perspectives regarding the ChatGPT outage. The primary issue seems to be focused on OpenAI’s website, whereas the mobile application appears to be functioning without any problems.
Accessing the ChatGPT website results in an error message stating “bad gateway,” indicating a potential issue on the server side. Conversely, when using the application and inquiring, “ChatGPT, are you down?” it promptly replies, “I’m here and ready! What do you need?” Additionally, it is currently able to respond to follow-up questions as well.
Downdetector, a platform that monitors service disruptions, is currently experiencing a surge of activity as users report errors and engage in discussions regarding the issues with ChatGPT. The chatbot is largely unavailable to the majority of users on the web, along with their previous interactions, including past prompts and queries.
OpenAI has acknowledged the issue and has indeed recognized it, as indicated by recent updates on its status-check website. (https://status.openai.com/), The AI company, under the leadership of Sam Altman, has issued two recent updates. The first statement indicated, “The issue has been identified and a fix is being implemented,” while the second noted, “A fix has been implemented and we are monitoring the results.” The specific cause of the outage remains unclear at this time.
The outage is notably occurring just days following OpenAI’s introduction of a new user interface on the web, which updated the backend custom instructions to enhance user customization of the chatbot’s responses. It remains unclear at this time whether these changes are related to the outage.
